‘Lucky’ The Life of HL ‘Bert’ Collins: cricketer, soldier, gambler by Max Bonnell
The newspapers named him ‘Lucky’, but former Australian cricketer Herbert Collins, a lifelong gambler, lost as many bets as he won.
In 1921, Collins was Australia’s captain and the most successful batsman in international cricket – within a decade he was destitute and living on charity.
In this limited edition hardback publication, author-researcher Max Bonnell explores Collins’ key role in rebuilding the Australian team after the First World War and later allegations that Collins sold a vital Test match (The Oval 1926) to gamblers.
Ticket holders to the Cricket World Cup, Australia v Sri Lanka match at the SCG on Sunday 8 March, 2015 can attend the book launch in the SCG Museum at 1:15pm.
The SCG Museum is located at the rear of the Lady’s Members Pavilion, inside Gate A. The limited edition of hardback books includes 192 pages plus a 16-page gloss picture section and is published by Ken Piesse Football and Cricket Books. Lucky is available at the launch or on line at http://www.cricketbooks.com.au/
The SCG Museum is open to valid Cricket World Cup ticket holders from gates opening until the close of the dinner break during each Cricket World Cup fixture at the SCG.
