Swans and Giants to clash in Sydney Derby XII

April 19, 2017

The Sydney Swans will look to put a disappointing start to the season behind them when the GWS Giants visit the SCG on Saturday for Sydney Derby XII.

It will be the 12th instalment of AFL’s newest rivalry and the fifth time the two clubs have played at the SCG, with the Western Sydney side still chasing their first win at the ground.

The struggling Swans (0-4) will be up against the in-form Giants (3-1) as the two sides put it all on the line for bragging rights in the harbour city.

Sydney stars Kurt Tippett, Isaac Heeney, Jarrad McVeigh and Gary Rohan are all available for selection in a move that could breathe new life into their forward 50.

“It’s great to have the players available,” coach John Longmire said. “Getting Tom Papley back last week and getting those four available, Tippett hasn’t missed a lot of football so he’s fitness wise in good shape.

“The others have trained the last few weeks and are training well. We’ll make the decision based on a few things including how they pull up … whether they all play we’re not quite sure.”

The SCG will welcome its eighth millionth Swans fan through the gates on Saturday, with a crowd of more than 35,000 expected to attend the cross-town clash. Gates open at 3.40pm with a JLT game to take place before the Sydney Derby XII bounce at 7.25pm. Tickets can be purchased here.
