The Sydney Cricket Ground is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former Trustee, the Hon. Peter McMahon AM.

Peter passed away peacefully on March 13, 2022, aged 90.

Late of Cronulla, formerly of Burraneer Bay, Caringbah, Mosman and Wagga Wagga, Peter was the beloved husband of Wendy (dec), cherished father of Martyn, Verona and Gregory. Grandfather of Naomi, Brendan, Watson, Fiona, Caitlin & Isolde. Great Grandfather of Huxley, Corbin, Tanner, Ella & Louis.

Peter served in the Australian Army in the 7th Regiment and went on to join the Australian Labor Party (ALP) in 1954. He was active and held various roles in local government finance and industrial committees; serving as a member of the New South Wales Central Executive 1970 - 1982. Secretary of ALP Local Government Policy Committee; Secretary of ALP Industrial Committee; Chairperson of Local Government Policy Committee.

He was awarded an Order of Australia (AM) 1982, for services to trade unionism and community.

“Peter was appointed the 102nd Trustee of the Sydney Cricket & Sports Ground Trust from 1978 to 1990 during a period of significant evolution of the precinct,” SCG and Venues NSW Chairman Tony Shepherd said.

“His term with the SCG Trust oversaw the construction of the former Sydney Football Stadium, Brewongle Stand, Clive Churchill Stand, Bill O’Reilly Stand and former Dally Messenger Stand, the first electronic scoreboard, and introduction of World Series Cricket.

“Peter and Wendy remained welcome friends of the SCG upon his retirement and we thank him for his service.

“Our deepest sympathies are with Peter’s family at this sad time,” he added.

Peter’s family and friends are invited to attend a celebration of his life at 11am on Tuesday, 22 March 2022 at St Aloysius of Gonzaga Catholic Church, 18 Giddings Ave, Cronulla.
